What is Tribal bellydancing?

"Tribal bellydance is both a celebration of the female spirit and a physical display of the strength and beauty of women. Its roots can be traced back to the rituals of past matriarchal cultures and to the secular entertainments that evolved as the gypsies traveled through India, Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Spain."-FatChanceBellydance

What are the benefits of bellydancing in general?

  • a fun, low-impact cardio workout
  • builds core strength
  • strengthens childbearing muscles, especially the obliques
  • tones legs, arms and buttocks
  • creates stamina throughout the body
  • improves coordination, flexibility and posture

What to expect: What do I wear and/or bring?

Wear comfortable clothes that allows you to move freely. Hip scarves are encouraged as both decorative and functional. Wearing a hip scarf with coins or fringe allows the student to see and/or hear the accentuated hip movements. Zils are needed in advance level classes and workshops, please carefully read the class or workshop description to be sure. Also, hip scarves and zils will be available for sale at class.

Each class begins with a little yoga to warm up the entire body as well as other movements targeting the abdominal area. Dancers then learn traditional movements as described in each class. Each movement is broken down into its components, practiced individually and then repeated as a part of a sequence to build stamina and put the movements into muscle memory.
